The first vineyard John leased and planted was Crane Vineyard, a small four-acre property in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Located in the foothills of Mount Veeder, John planted this parcel to Merlot vines in 1996, adding Syrah vines a few years later.

Oak Knoll District is located to the north of Napa city, placing it right in the path of the daily fog that creeps up from the Bay and making it one of the cooler AVAs. Crane Vineyard is to the west of this AVA, where a small alluvial fan sits at the base of Mount Veeder; here the soil is more gravelly and the terrain slightly undulating. Red wines especially from this AVA tend to be among the more elegant and understated in Napa Valley.
